How to find a great tax attorney

Finding a tax attorney is one of the most important things you can do when engaged in a tax law case.

There is no question that tax season can be one of most stressful times of year for many people in Washington and across the U.S. Whether people choose to do their own taxes or select a company to handle their taxes for them, issues can arise. In some cases, taxpayers may need to retain the services of a tax attorney in order to ensure their rights are upheld. It can be scary and overwhelming when people attempt to handle tax problems on their own. Finding the right lawyer can help people get through this difficult time.

Start wide and narrow it down

The American Bar Association encourages people to meet with several tax attorneys first before narrowing it down to one. Since every tax situation has unique circumstances, it is crucial that people choose the lawyer that best meets their needs. People may want to start by asking trusted relatives, colleagues and friends for recommendations. They can then set up a consultation with a few of the attorneys that their friends referred them to. Some lawyers offer free initial consultations, making it easy to meet with several attorneys prior to choosing the right one.

Asking questions and feeling comfortable

Since people will be working with their attorney for a certain period of time, it is vital that they find one that they can trust and confide in. It is essential that people feel comfortable with their attorney. When seeking which attorney to partner with, people should ask a lot of questions. This includes the following:

  • What types of cases does the attorney generally handle?
  • Does the attorney belong to any organizations or hold any special licenses?
  • Does the attorney handle cases in the particular area you are looking in?
  • What type of payment plan does the attorney have? Are payments due up front?

During the initial consultation, a strong lawyer will focus on the client’s needs, as well as the factors surrounding the case. A person seeking legal help should make sure that the lawyer shows a genuine interest in his or her case, and makes some definite plans on potential courses of action.

An attorney in your corner

When you need to go to court regarding your taxes, you don’t want to go at it alone. After you find an attorney that you are comfortable with, the legal process may feel easier. With a Washington attorney on your side, you no longer have to wonder whether you are doing the right thing.
