Can I write off my home office as an expense on my taxes?

On Behalf of Insight Law | Mar 9, 2024 | Tax Debt |

When you work from home, you may be able to deduct certain expenses connected to your home office from your taxes. This deduction can help reduce your taxable income and potentially lower the amount of taxes you owe.

To qualify for this deduction, you must meet specific Internal Revenue Service requirements and follow the rules for calculation.

Eligibility

To be eligible for the home office deduction, you must regularly use a specific area of your home for business, and that use must be exclusive. In other words, you should use it only for work and not for personal activities. This area can be a room or a part of a room, such as a desk or work area.

Simple calculation of deduction

There are two methods for calculating the home office deduction that the IRS allows: the regular method and the simplified method. The simplified method allows you to deduct $5 per square foot for the portion of your home you use for business. It has a limit of up to 300 square feet. This method is easy to calculate, but it may result in a lower deduction compared to the regular method.

Regular calculation of deduction

The regular method requires you to calculate the actual expenses of your home office, including mortgage interest, home repairs, utilities, insurance and depreciation. You need to determine the percentage of your home that you use for business and apply that percentage to your total home expenses. While this method may require more paperwork, it could result in a higher deduction.

When claiming the home office deduction, keep detailed records of your home office expenses, including receipts and invoices, to support your deduction claims.
